1.1. Purpose of this document

This is a semi-formal HOW-TO for installing and maintaining a reasonably secure and stable Internet/Intranet server running FreeBSD. It's not a replacement for real Documentation but rather a walk-through of how I solved various problems during installation and maintenance. I use it as a reference when setting up new machines and as a place to keep my experiences with those systems. Eventhough some of the items are rather specific to what and how I do things I can imagine, that it's useful for others, too... For instance, I hardly found any useful help on the net regarding the integration of Cyrus with Exim. Well, now you can: here ;-)

Most of the examples are real-world examples of the site hosting this document: tomster.org. While this may give you insights into misconfigurations and/or holes I request that you do not use this information to infringe the integrity of this host but rather submit any flaws so I can rectify them to my own benefit and of the potential readers of this cookbook ;-)

Thanks!

Tom Lazar
