What is this?
Hi, my name is Tom Lazar and I'm a Plone and Zope developer based in Berlin, Germany and this is my personal and professional (no big difference, really...) website.

Futurefeedforward already great

Filed Under:

I'm blogging this from a train from Berlin to Hamburg where I'll be giving an introduction to plone to members of the Klingende Museum there and since there currently isn't any internet access on the train, I simply skipped through my feeds bevore leaving and downloading bits that I'd think would entertain me during the trip. And boy, did I hit gold ;-)

Stumbled upon via BoingBoing I got to read the first chapter of a work in progress by the same name Futurefeedforward. Quoting Cory Doctorow "the story rockets forward in a scene that combines the best of Neal Stephenson, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling and The Onion." I cannot help but agree. I'm hooked. Here's a snippet from BoingBoing's snippet: ;-)

I wore a gray suit to my first deposition, a shapeless, off-the-rack sort of a number festooned with cargo pockets and illogical darts. 100% Worsted wooline. Summer weight. Hand stitched. 38 Regular. $49.95 at the GAP I passed on my way in. I left my old pants in the dressing room. They recycle them. Rebuild and recertify. That sort of thing. Pre-owned pants. I think they have that.

But, like with any literature worth anyhting, in my opinion, a snippet doesn't do justice to the whole, of course. And apart from the reminiscence to Stephenson et. al. the bit where the (apparently) main character Wim starts reading the fine print on a little packet he finds in abovementinoed new pants while he's being questioned by a commission reminded me strongly of the consumer critical parts of Fight Club. But you can see for yourself, because the whole shebang is licensed under the creative commons licence (working link to site, when I'm back online). And while the phony licence agreement at the beginning has its own merit, I suggest you skip the 'meat' ;-)
