I still can't quite believe it - but I'm going on vacation! It means a hell of a lot to me. For one thing it's the first one in 3 1/2 years. (Basically, ever since I've been self-employed again).

Secondly, I will be on my own! This will be a novelty, too - ever since our oldest son Josh has been born 2 1/2 years ago.

But the biggest issue is that of dependance. When I turned self-employed in 2001 my initial focus was on gaining new customers and contracts. After a while I 'suddenly' noticed that I had more work than I could handle on my own - but nobody to share it with! As a result I was permanently overworked and my clients suffered, too. At peak times I would receive something like 20 support calls in one day - while at another client, trying to fix their stuff.

I realized, that in my effort to get work I had oversucceeded and had made myself irreplaceable. Ouch! Of course, nobody is really irreplaceable - but what good does that do you if you simply don't know anybody who can do exactly what you do?

Well, I've finally found them - a Machead, a Windows-Admin and a UNIX-guy ;-) Apart from the vain notion, that it takes three people to replace me *g* I now can finally take a vacation - without my mobile and without my powerbook!

I'll spend a week at Stolzenhagen. It is my sole intention of this vacation to a) get a tan and b) bored! The notion that one doesn't know what to do (because there is nothing to do) as opposed to not knowing what to do next (because there's so much to do) seems very enticing ;-)

I won't be leaving until Sunday, so there will still be updates to this blog til then. Probably...
