So instead of doing my bookkeeping on this cosy wet-cold saturday (or going running ;-) I've returned to bed with my powerbook while everybody else is gone and caught up on various mailing lists. On the plone-user list Sebastian Potter posted a link to his how-to on turning on caching for plone sites. I've implemented it and this site has become noticably faster ;-)

Of course, with pages weighing in at a 80 - 100K plus images it's still not a racing horse, but that just highlights the need for caching...

Also, with the imminent release of a new plone-based site on this server and a slowly but steadily rising number of daily visitors to this site (up from 80 visits per day in mid December to currently 200...) this came in really handy!
